UK mulls sanctions on 2 Israeli ultranationalist ministers

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has revealed that the U.K. government is contemplating imposing sanctions on two ultranationalist Israeli Cabinet ministers, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The reason behind this consideration is the ministers’ “abhorrent” comments regarding the situation in Gaza and the West Bank.

An urgent meeting has been called by Britain, France, and Algeria at the U.N. Security Council to address the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in northern Gaza, described as “dire” by Starmer.

Starmer emphasized the need for Israel to minimize civilian casualties, facilitate the entry of aid into Gaza, and ensure the effective operation of U.N. humanitarian partners. Former Foreign Secretary David Cameron also disclosed his plan to sanction the ministers for obstructing aid to Gaza and promoting illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a plan that was stalled due to the U.K.’s snap election.
