The Legacy of Uganda’s Christian Martyrs: A Historical Exhibition
The relics of Uganda’s Christian martyrs, including chains, crosses, bones, and jawbones, are on display for the first time in an exhibition titled “God and Caesar: The Holy Uganda Martyrs@60.” Organized by Uganda Martyrs University, the government, and the Catholic Church, the exhibition sheds light on the lives and deaths of these revered figures.
Archbishop of Kampala Paul Ssemogerere oversaw the return of the relics from Rome, marking a significant moment in Uganda’s history. The exhibition features archival documents, photographs, and films from the canonization ceremony of the martyrs in 1964.
The exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Uganda Martyrs’ canonization and showcases the relics that bear witness to the martyrs’ agony and heroism. Visitors can see items such as chains, crosses, and crucifixes that belonged to these revered figures.
Curated by Dr. David Ngendo Tshimba, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the first Black saints canonized by the Catholic Church. It features memorabilia, photographs, and relics that highlight the enduring legacy of Uganda’s Christian martyrs.
