World Food Day, celebrated globally on 16 October, prompted the United States of America Embassy to urge South Sudan’s Transitional Government to prioritize Food Security in the country. With up to 9 million South Sudanese facing acute food insecurity, the embassy emphasized the need for action.
Despite the fertile land in South Sudan, food insecurity persists. The American government has already provided over $600 million in humanitarian aid, with an additional $100 million recently announced. This aid aims to reach 1 million people facing food insecurity in the coming months.
While climate shocks play a role in the crisis, the root causes lie within the hands of South Sudanese leaders. Issues such as conflict, economic instability, and corruption must be tackled urgently to address the humanitarian crisis. The embassy calls for transparency in public revenue usage to support food security.
