The United Kingdom considers sanctioning Israeli officials over incendiary comments about Palestinians
The United Kingdom is contemplating sanctions against Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for their inflammatory remarks regarding Palestinians. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that he is considering these measures in response to Smotrich’s justification of starving civilians in Gaza and Ben-Gvir’s praise of violent settlers in the West Bank.
Despite the threat of sanctions, both officials remain steadfast in their positions. Ben-Gvir stated, “They don’t scare me and I will continue to act according to Israel’s national interests,” while Smotrich affirmed, “No threat will prevent me from doing what is right for the citizens of Israel.”
Starmer’s government has taken a tougher stance on Israel, limiting arms exports and imposing sanctions on Israeli settler organizations. The UK is currently leading discussions at the UN Security Council to address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, urging Israel to minimize civilian casualties and facilitate greater humanitarian aid access.
As the US also emphasizes the need for humanitarian improvement in Gaza, Israel vows to ensure aid reaches those in need.
