Despite doubts about his guilt, Texas is set to execute Robert Roberson for the murder of his two-year-old daughter. The Board of Pardons and Paroles rejected his plea for clemency, making him the first person in the US facing capital punishment for a murder conviction linked to shaken baby syndrome.
Roberson maintains his innocence, with the lead detective in his case also supporting his innocence claim. Although Governor Greg Abbott could grant a 30-day reprieve, full clemency requires the board’s recommendation.
‘System failed’
Concerns about the evidence of shaken baby syndrome and new evidence suggesting the girl died from severe pneumonia have sparked calls to halt Roberson’s execution. Support from conservative activist Doug Deason and detective Brian Wharton further reinforce doubts about his guilt.
‘Rise in the rate of executions’
Roberson is among several men scheduled for execution in the US, raising concerns about the increasing rate of capital punishment. The UN human rights spokesperson has called for a moratorium on executions in the US, citing recent controversial cases.
