The District Court in Łódź sentenced the student to four months in prison, suspended for a year, for painting the statue’s hands and face and adding the phrase “Maxima culpa,” referencing a critical book. The judge highlighted the timing of the vandalism, which occurred during Easter and the anniversary of John Paul II’s passing, interpreting it as a disrespectful act.
Defense Argues No Intent to Insult
The defendant’s lawyer contradicted the court’s decision, stating that the student did not intend to offend. While acknowledging the vandalism, the student denied insulting the monument or religious sentiments. The defense plans to appeal the verdict, questioning both its outcome and rationale.
