Shackleton’s Original Hope Cross on Display at Discovery Point in Dundee
Sir Ernest Shackleton, the renowned English polar explorer, passed away in 1922 during his Antarctic expedition on the Quest. His crew honored his wishes by burying him at Hope Point in South Georgia and building a memorial cross known as the Hope Cross.
After nearly a century, the original cross has been transferred to the Discovery Centre in Dundee for public viewing. Shackleton’s legacy of leadership and exploration continues to inspire many, including his granddaughter Alexandra Shackleton, who describes Antarctica as “the most beautiful place on earth.”
The exhibition in Dundee not only commemorates Shackleton’s achievements but also highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of the great explorer’s impact on future generations.
