Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Calls for Strengthening Regional Cooperation at SCO Summit
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his opening remarks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, emphasized the need for member states to enhance the organisation’s framework for addressing regional challenges and fostering close cooperation. The 23rd meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of SCO member states commenced in Islamabad, gathering leaders and representatives from 11 countries.
PM Shehbaz stressed the significance of stability in Afghanistan for realizing trade opportunities and highlighted the importance of investing in collective connectivity capacities. He also called for tangible actions to strengthen cooperation in trade, connectivity, and economy.
Addressing climate change as an existential crisis, Shehbaz Sharif urged SCO countries to prioritize environmental cooperation. He also emphasized the expansion of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to enhance regional cooperation.
The summit witnessed bilateral meetings and discussions on economic and security cooperation, with a focus on mutual respect and shared goals. With extensive security measures and arrangements in place, the SCO summit in Islamabad aims to promote economic, political, and security cooperation among member states in the region.
