The South Australian government is cracking down on sexually explicit deepfakes created by artificial intelligence with new legislation.
Offenders could face up to four years in prison and fines reaching $20,000 under the proposed bill.
High school teacher Hannah Grundy fell victim to deep fake technology, experiencing the nightmare of seeing her face on another woman’s body online.
“When I first saw the content it was catastrophic. It was nightmarish,” Grundy expressed.
Attorney-General Kyam Maher emphasized the dangers posed by AI-generated content, leading to the need for stricter regulations.
The legislation not only targets creators but also individuals who host, share, or facilitate deep fake content.
Enforcing the law effectively will be a challenge, raising concerns about resource availability for policing.
