Proposal for a Cap on Number of TDs in Dáil – Referendum Requested
Independent Deputy Noel Grealish called on the Government to consider a proposal for a cap on the number of TDs in the Dáil and to put it to the people in a referendum. With population growth estimates indicating a potential increase to seven million people by 2057, Grealish raised concerns about the need for a larger parliament to accommodate 240 members.
Grealish urged Minister Donohoe to refer the matter to the Electoral Commission for review, to ensure a fair and balanced examination of the issue. In response, Minister Donohoe acknowledged the importance of population growth but emphasized the necessity of adequate representation in the Dáil. While he expressed reluctance to impose a cap, he welcomed the Electoral Commission’s input on the matter.
