PPP and Fazl meet Sharif brothers for constitutional talks at Jati Umra

The Latest Political Developments: Understanding the Proposed 26th Constitutional Amendment

The political landscape in Pakistan has been abuzz with discussions surrounding the proposed 26th constitutional amendment. Recently, the PPP and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, visited Lahore’s Jati Umra residence of the Sharif brothers to discuss this amendment, particularly focusing on extending the top judge’s term.

Three separate drafts of the constitutional package are currently being prepared by the government, PPP, and JUI-F. A committee, led by PPP’s Khursheed Shah, aims to reconcile differences between lawmakers after recent political turmoil in the National Assembly.

During the meeting, an agreement was reached between the PPP and JUI-F on a shared draft. While the specifics of the proposed amendment were not revealed, key points such as parliamentary supremacy and constitutional integrity were highlighted by Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

As tensions rise, the PTI announced its opposition to the package and called for nationwide protests, citing concerns about the constitutional amendments and Imran Khan’s recent incarceration.

Despite the differing stances, efforts are being made to build consensus among parliamentary parties and ensure a smooth legislative process.
