Poll suggests 80% of young Germans fear war in Europe

The latest Shell Youth Study in Germany, titled “Pragmatism Between Disillusionment and Embracing Diversity,” reveals the concerns of 2,509 adolescents aged 12 to 25. With ongoing wars, climate change effects, and political polarization, 81% fear the possibility of war in Europe due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Poverty concerns have also risen to 67% among young respondents. Interestingly, 69% support a strong NATO presence, indicating a shift in perspectives influenced by conflicts like Russia’s war in Ukraine. Despite divided opinions on military support for Ukraine, 60% agree that Russia must be punished for its aggression. The study shows a growing awareness among youth that global politics cannot be ignored. Notably, opinions on military support and assistance to Ukraine vary between East and West Germany. This study highlights the evolving perspectives and concerns of Germany’s young population in the face of world events.
