The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abass, met with the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) to address concerns about low pension payments in the country. He acknowledged the challenges faced by retirees receiving meager sums like N10,000 monthly, emphasizing the need for improved support for the elderly.
Dr. Abass expressed his commitment to collaborate with the NSCC to enhance the pension system and provide better care for senior citizens. He discussed the possibility of increasing the agency’s annual budget, currently at N250 million, and establishing operational offices in each geopolitical zone.
The Director-General of NSCC, Dr. Emem Omokaro, emphasized the need for increased budgetary provisions and more offices nationwide to serve a larger population of senior citizens. The Speaker assured his support in developing bills for healthcare and transportation concessions for the elderly.
This proactive approach by Dr. Abass demonstrates his dedication to improving the welfare of retirees and senior citizens in Nigeria, highlighting the importance of addressing gaps in the pension system for a better future.
