Morocco aims to double its green electricity production in the southern provinces ahead of the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted with Spain and Portugal. The Ministry of Energy Transition plans to build 1.4 gigawatts of new wind and solar capacity by 2027, attracting investments of $2.1 billion from local and foreign investors.
Additionally, a project to develop a 3-gigawatt cable connecting renewable energy plants in the region has caught the interest of private investors. The recent recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara by countries like France and Spain has prompted increased investments in energy infrastructure in the area.
The southern provinces currently account for about a quarter of Morocco’s total renewable energy capacity. This expansion aligns with Morocco’s commitment to sustainability and meeting the growing energy demands.
