A plea for international aid to locate Ukrainian children allegedly taken by Russia during the invasion of Ukraine has been issued by Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the President of Ukraine. Yermak stated that Russia has not disclosed any information regarding the whereabouts of these children. This appeal was made during a virtual media briefing on the Bring Kids Back UA initiative led by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The campaign aims to coordinate efforts between the Ukrainian government, partner nations, and international organizations to repatriate children displaced from Ukraine. According to Yermak, nearly 20,000 child deportations have been documented, with 388 returned and 555 allegedly deceased, calling it a poignant tragedy of the war.
Recent reports by Reuters indicated that arrest warrants were issued by the International Criminal Court against Russian President Vladimir Putin and children’s commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova for war crimes involving child abduction. Despite Moscow’s claims of safeguarding vulnerable children, the situation remains unresolved.
Yermak praised South Africa’s role in peace negotiations, noting President Cyril Ramaphosa’s advocacy for human rights and support for international cooperation in resolving global crises.
