Juba Court postpones Minister Awut’s defamation case to Thursday

Defamation Suit Against Education Minister Adjourned by Juba Court

The trial of a defamation suit filed by Education Minister Awut Deng Acuil against three individuals representing the Luanjang Community in Tonj East County has been adjourned to Thursday, 17 October. The suit was filed in response to accusations made in a letter to President Salva Kiir earlier this year.

Despite objections from the defense counsel, Judge Lual Cuei proceeded with a closed-door hearing, prompting plans for an appeal. The defense argues that South Sudan’s constitution allows for public hearings unless specific circumstances warrant privacy, which the plaintiff’s lawyer failed to demonstrate.

The defense also contests the severity of the alleged defamatory statements, claiming that there is no basis for a closed trial. They maintain that the trial should be open to the public to ensure fairness and transparency.

As the case continues, the defense remains steadfast in their position that there is no ground for prosecution and will continue to challenge the decision for a closed trial.
