Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned “the new Israeli aggression against civilians in the city of Nabatieh, which deliberately targeted a meeting of the municipal council that was discussing the city’s services and relief situation”.
An Israeli airstrike on a municipal building in Nabatieh, southern Lebanon, resulted in the tragic death of the city’s mayor, Ahmed Kaheil, and at least five others. Another airstrike in Yammouneh claimed the lives of two individuals as well. The attacks have sparked outrage and condemnation from Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
The Israeli airstrikes in Nabatieh, which reportedly included at least ten bombings, have caused significant casualties and injuries, with rescue efforts ongoing to save those trapped under debris. In addition to Nabatieh, several other locations in Lebanon have also been targeted, escalating tensions in the region.
Targeting Relief Workers
Reports from the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor have highlighted Israel’s ongoing targeting of relief and ambulance teams in Lebanon, leading to a significant number of casualties among medical and relief personnel. The situation continues to deteriorate, with fears of escalated conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli army.
Historical Context
Lebanon has a long history of resistance against Israeli occupation, with Hezbollah playing a crucial role in defending the country’s sovereignty. While Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, it still occupies certain areas, fueling tensions and conflicts that threaten regional stability.
