Israeli airstrike targets Nabatieh mayor in official meeting

An Israeli air strike on Nabatieh in southern Lebanon tragically resulted in the death of the city’s mayor, Ahmad Kheil, along with at least five other individuals. The city’s municipal building was bombed during a daily crisis management meeting, leading to several injuries as well.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned Israel for deliberately targeting the municipal meeting, claiming it was discussing important city issues. Israel justified the strikes by stating they were aimed at “Hezbollah targets” near civilian buildings, yet provided no evidence to support this claim.

Unifil troops not leaving

Israel’s military also announced navy forces collaborating with ground troops in southern Lebanon, alongside ongoing criticism for attacks on the UN’s peacekeeping mission, Unifil. EU countries contributing to Unifil have no intention of pulling back, despite Israeli pressure to do so.

Since October last year, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in staggering casualties and displacements, significantly impacting the region. The violence continues to escalate, with no immediate resolution in sight.
