Israel Resumes Air Strikes on Beirut Despite US Objections
Israel has resumed air strikes on Beirut, targeting the capital despite objections from the United States. The Israeli military jets launched three strikes on the southern suburbs, defying Washington’s concerns over the scope of the attacks in Lebanon.
The US continues to support Israel’s wars against Hezbollah and Hamas, while expressing disapproval of the bombing campaign in Beirut. The strikes on Wednesday were said to target combat equipment stored underground, with warnings issued to residents beforehand.
However, Amnesty International and others criticize the Israeli military for issuing warnings too late, leading to civilian casualties. The US has threatened to withhold weapons deliveries unless more humanitarian aid reaches Gaza but continues to send billions of dollars worth of arms to Israel.
US Expresses Concern
The resumption of strikes in Beirut followed strong criticism from a US government spokesperson, who opposed the nature of Israel’s military campaigns. Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister also received assurances from US officials regarding reducing attacks on the capital.
No Ceasefire in Sight
With over 1,350 casualties in Lebanon since the escalation of attacks, Prime Minister Netanyahu dismisses the possibility of a ceasefire. Hezbollah’s deputy leader calls for a ceasefire but threatens to expand missile strikes. Israeli attacks persist across Lebanon, resulting in casualties in various towns.
