Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are causing concern both from a humanitarian perspective and in terms of energy security, according to Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Speaking at the presentation of IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2024, Birol highlighted the region’s significance in global oil and gas production and the importance of monitoring the situation closely.
The World Energy Outlook report addresses various energy security challenges, focusing on traditional risks in oil and gas markets as well as emerging challenges related to clean energy supply chains. Birol also emphasized the impact of climate change on energy infrastructure due to extreme weather events.
Recognizing the evolving definition of energy security, IEA plans to host an international summit on the future of energy security in London next April, in collaboration with the UK government. This initiative aims to promote a common understanding among global decision-makers.
