Transforming Hong Kong into an International Education Hub
Student housing in Hong Kong is set to become a major property segment as demand is projected to exceed supply by 2028. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu highlighted the initiative “Studying in Hong Kong” to establish the city as a global hub for postsecondary education in his recent policy address.
Moreover, plans for the expansion of Northern Metropolis University Town to 80 hectares and the development conceptual framework to be published in 2026 were revealed. Lee also announced measures to increase student accommodation supply by encouraging the private sector to convert hotels and commercial buildings.
Kathy Lee, head of research at Colliers, emphasized the importance of assessing land use allocation and planning permissions to ensure sufficient housing for the growing number of non-local students and professionals. The relaxation of the building conversion approval process is expected to stimulate market supply and address the current shortage in this emerging property market.
