Family mourns tragic loss in epilepsy-related death

The tragic death of Louise Young highlights the importance of raising awareness about Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). At just 24 years old, Louise lost her life to SUDEP, leaving her family devastated. Despite being diagnosed with epilepsy at a young age, Louise did not let the condition define her. She pursued her dreams, studying at Maynooth University and embarking on a career in media.

Louise’s mother, Tina, emphasizes the need for greater awareness of SUDEP, as many are unfamiliar with this aspect of epilepsy. A recent study in Ireland found that around 33 people die from SUDEP each year, with most cases affecting men and occurring while the individual is in bed.

Epilepsy Ireland is advocating for improved access to specialist care and treatment for epilepsy, as well as increased awareness of SUDEP. The organization stresses the importance of proper certification of deaths in individuals with epilepsy to accurately collect data on SUDEP and other related deaths.

As we commemorate SUDEP Awareness Day, let’s honor Louise’s legacy by spreading knowledge about this condition and supporting those affected by epilepsy. Together, we can work towards a future where lives are not cut short by this silent killer.
