EU allocates 30M euros to curb irregular migration from Senegal.

A small boat with migrants arrives at La Restinga on the Canary island of El Hierro, Spain on Wednesday Oct. 4, 2023.

The European Union announced a 30-million-euro package to prevent irregular migration from Senegal, aiming to save lives and combat migrant smuggling.

Thousands risk their lives every year on the perilous Atlantic crossing from Senegal to Europe, prompting the EU to take action to prevent further tragedies.

Funds will be used to aid at-risk migrants, fight smuggling, and raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration in Senegal.

Senegal’s coasts are key departure points for migrants heading to Europe, with recent incidents underscoring the need for increased support and preventive measures.

In addition to migration efforts, the EU also announced a grant for skills development in Senegal’s pharmaceutical sector to empower young people for a sustainable future.
