England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officials are optimistic about finding a solution if India does not participate in the 2025 Champions Trophy hosted by Pakistan. The presence of India is crucial to safeguard the tournament’s broadcast rights.
Pakistan, the reigning champions of the tournament from 2017, is set to host the event from Feb. 19 to March 9.
Due to strained political relations, India has not visited Pakistan since 2008, only playing each other in multi-team competitions. Last year, despite hosting the Asia Cup, India played in Sri Lanka due to government restrictions.
The final decision on India’s participation in the Champions Trophy will be made by the Indian government, according to BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla.
ECB Chief Richard Gould expressed hope for a full competition in Pakistan and discussed potential alternatives if India does not attend. ECB Chair Richard Thompson also remains positive about reaching an agreement, citing the amicable relations seen at the recent Twenty20 World Cup.
Overall, the cricketing geopoltics between the two countries will likely play a significant role in the final decision, prioritizing security concerns.
