The Australian Army has donated 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in a show of support against Russian aggression. The move comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled his “victory plan,” including joining NATO and using longer-range missiles to target Russian military assets.
Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy emphasized that the tanks would bolster Ukraine’s firepower and mobility in the ongoing conflict. This donation marks Canberra’s commitment to providing over $1.3 billion in military aid to Kyiv, with an additional $200 million in non-military assistance.
Conroy stated that the timing of the donation was strategic as Australia transitions to newer tank models. He expressed pride in supporting Ukraine and standing against Russia’s aggression, despite potential backlash.
Zelenskyy’s plan aims to end the war by next year, emphasizing NATO membership and missile strikes on Russian targets. The US has pledged additional security assistance, reinforcing international support for Ukraine’s defense.
The donation signifies solidarity with Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and underscores international efforts to counter Russian aggression.
