Colombia Introduces Six-Point Plan to Accelerate Peace Agreement at the UN
Colombia has unveiled a new strategy to expedite the implementation of the 2016 peace agreement, presenting it to the UN Security Council in New York. Interior Minister Juan Fernando Cristo and Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo outlined the six-point agenda, focusing on critical areas impacting quality of life, security, and development in conflict-affected regions.
The plan prioritizes achieving a national consensus, implementing rural reform, and enhancing security in a country grappling with multiple armed conflicts. This initiative follows the latest report from the UN Verification Mission, which highlights progress under President Gustavo Petro’s administration while emphasizing the remaining challenges.
Coordinated by the Ministry of Interior, the plan involves collaboration with the private sector, cooperation agencies, and other government entities to accelerate the agreement’s execution that stagnated during the Duque presidency. Key components include a comprehensive rural reform program, redistributing three million hectares of land and fostering territorial transformation through government agreements.
The plan also underscores the importance of advancing the legislative agenda, enhancing security measures, and establishing a monitoring commission to oversee implementation. UN Special Representative Carlos Ruiz Massieu praised the plan, addressing the Security Council and emphasizing the need to address ongoing challenges, including threats from illegal armed groups and violence against social leaders.
