Armenia Violates Espoo Convention, Harms Azerbaijani Ecology
Amin Mammadov, co-founder of the “Environmental Protection First” coalition, revealed Armenia’s continuous breach of the Espoo Convention, neglecting environmental impact assessments in border regions during a briefing in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The briefing shed light on the illegal activities of Armenia’s mining industry, causing ecological harm to Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus region. Mammadov emphasized the ongoing protests by Azerbaijani governmental bodies and civil society against these violations.
Using satellite imagery, the coalition documented Armenian industrial operations in border areas with Azerbaijan, sharing it with accredited diplomatic representatives and local media. Mammadov urged Armenia to allow expert monitoring of its mining facilities by representatives from Azerbaijan and other countries.
