A recent study in Ireland revealed that approximately 33 people die each year from Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), with more men affected than women. The study, conducted in 2019, found that SUDEP was mentioned on death certificates in only 52% of cases. Epilepsy Ireland is calling for greater awareness and improved access to specialist care for those with epilepsy.
The research, led by Yvonne Langan, highlighted the importance of understanding SUDEP in Ireland. Paddy McGeoghegan of Epilepsy Ireland emphasized the need for a national strategy to address epilepsy-related deaths, which total around 130 a year in the country.
One tragic case of SUDEP was that of Louise Young, a 24-year-old from Co Wexford who passed away in January 2021. Louise, who had epilepsy since childhood, was a strong advocate for epilepsy awareness and lived her life to the fullest. Her mother Tina shared the importance of awareness and adherence to medication for those living with epilepsy.
