Canada Facing Alarming Rise in Antisemitic Incidents
Canada has witnessed a concerning 670% surge in reported antisemitic incidents since October 7, 2023, compared to the same period last year, as per a report by the Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combatting Antisemitism. This rise includes violent acts like shootings at Jewish institutions and arson attacks on synagogues, schools, and community centers. Despite Jews making up only 1.4% of the population, they are the targets of 70% of religious-based hate crimes.
In Toronto, 19% of all hate crimes last year were aimed at Jews, with tensions escalating during the Middle East conflict. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned these actions, emphasizing the need to combat antisemitism. Pro-Palestinian protests have also contributed to the increase in antisemitism, leading to support for terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.
The report highlighted key figures promoting antisemitism in Canada, including Ontario lawmaker Sarah Jama, who blamed Israel for a tragic event and called for its destruction. Other individuals mentioned include Laith Marouf and Samidoun, a pro-Palestinian group sanctioned for supporting terrorism.
Government actions are being taken to address and combat antisemitism in Canada to protect the Jewish community and uphold peace.
