The government of India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, is considering implementing a law to prevent the deliberate contamination of food with spit after a surge in complaints. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is contemplating introducing an ordinance to address the issue, sparked by unverified videos showing individuals spitting into food served in restaurants. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is planning to discuss two ordinances aimed at preventing and penalizing food tampering during a high-level meeting with officials.
This initiative follows previous orders by Mr. Adityanath requiring food businesses to display operator information and install CCTV cameras. The state-wide campaign seeks to verify all employees in food establishments to prevent incidents of food adulteration with unsanitary substances. While some activists and politicians have criticized the move as discriminatory, the government is focused on ensuring food safety for consumers.
As tensions rise in response to the circulating videos, the proposed ordinances aim to establish measures preventing food contamination, securing consumer rights, and maintaining hygiene standards in the state.
