UNSC supports UNIFIL in Lebanon after Israeli assaults

UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon Under Fire Amid Israeli-Hezbollah Clashes

The United Nations Security Council expressed deep concern as several UN peacekeeping positions in southern Lebanon were attacked during clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants. The council urged all parties to prioritize the safety of UN personnel and facilities, emphasizing that such attacks are unacceptable.

Since the start of the conflict in early October, UNIFIL positions have been targeted multiple times, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers. Despite Israeli demands for UN withdrawal, UN troops remain in place, supporting Lebanese forces in maintaining peace.

International Support Needed

With tensions escalating, the US and France emphasized the importance of strengthening Lebanon’s army to enforce Resolution 1701 effectively. The Russian ambassador condemned threats to UN personnel, stressing the need for all parties to comply with the resolution.

Efforts to prevent the transport of weapons into Lebanon and violations of the Blue Line are ongoing concerns. While discussions around UNIFIL’s mandate continue, no changes have been made. The mission remains crucial for regional stability until August 2025.
