The UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon have not successfully carried out their mission of moving Hezbollah terrorists beyond the Litani river, allowing them to continue attacking Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the peacekeepers to remove themselves from the area to give IDF soldiers better access to the terrorists. Despite efforts to protect the peacekeepers, any harm that may come to them would be the fault of the UN for not complying with Israel’s need to defend itself.
Hezbollah’s involvement in attacks on Israeli civilians, in coordination with Hamas, shows their complicity in terrorism and disregard for innocent lives. Israel is justified in enforcing the terms of the 2006 Security Council resolution, aimed at stopping Hezbollah rockets. The UN peacekeeping forces, if not serving their purpose of keeping peace, should retreat to allow Israel to root out terrorists without hindrance.
In the face of biased decisions by the UN, Israel must prioritize self-defense over protecting peacekeepers who shield terrorists. International law does not require soldiers to be put at risk to defend those who hinder legitimate military operations. It is crucial for the UN to support Israel in combating terrorism in the region.
