United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that attacks on peacekeepers could be classified as war crimes after Israeli tanks breached a base in southern Lebanon. The incident is part of a series of Israeli violations against the UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL. The UN spokesperson emphasized that peacekeepers must not be targeted as it breaches international law and may constitute war crimes. Israeli tanks destroyed the main gate of a UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon and forcefully entered, following an intense air campaign amid rising tensions with Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the UN chief to move peacekeepers out of harm’s way, accusing Hezbollah of using them as human shields. However, UNIFIL remains steadfast in staying to uphold peace and security in the region.
Established in 1978, UNIFIL’s mandate includes confirming Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon and restoring peace and security. It expanded after the 2006 war to monitor hostilities and support the Lebanese government in the region.
