Britain has taken a stand against settler violence in the occupied West Bank by imposing new sanctions. Foreign Secretary David Lammy criticized the Israeli government for allowing settler violence to go unchecked. The sanctions target three “illegal settler outposts” and four groups involved in violence against Palestinians.
The organizations facing sanctions include a religious school, a NGO, a charity, and a construction company, while the settlements affected are the Tirzah Valley Farm Outpost, Meitarim Outpost, and Shuvi Eretz Outpost. The United States has also announced similar sanctions against some of these groups.
Lammy stressed the importance of accountability and called for Israel to crack down on settler violence and expansion on Palestinian land. The West Bank has seen a surge in violence following Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, with over 700 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the past year.
The UK’s announcement of sanctions followed revelations by former foreign secretary David Cameron about plans to sanction two “extremist” Israeli ministers. This move underscores Britain’s commitment to addressing human rights abuses in the region.
