Russian President Putin Seeks Ratification of Treaty with North Korea

Russian President Vladimir Putin has formally requested the State Duma to ratify a treaty signed in June with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The treaty, signed during Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, includes a mutual defense pact between Russia and North Korea in case of foreign aggression.

The treaty aims to ensure regional and international peace and security, based on the principles of mutual respect, sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs. It also prohibits agreements that go against each other’s key interests and opposes Western sanctions.

Recent claims by South Korea of DPRK soldiers fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine have been dismissed by the Kremlin as false. Putin previously called such claims “nonsense.” The treaty is now awaiting ratification by the Russian legislature.
