President Yoon Suk-yeol recently announced plans to designate a tertiary general hospital in Jeju Island to meet the growing medical demands of its residents and tourists. In a public forum, President Yoon highlighted the lack of a tertiary general hospital in Jeju despite its population of 700,000 and over 10 million annual visitors, emphasizing the need for critical medical facilities in the region.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare also revealed plans to improve the evaluation criteria for tertiary general hospital designation by the end of this year, considering factors like population size, patient medical usage patterns, and existing healthcare infrastructure. President Yoon further pledged to push forward the construction of a new port in Jeju, signaling a renewed focus on infrastructure development in the region.
Additionally, President Yoon designated Jeju as a pilot urban air mobility (UAM) operational area, aiming to support tourism initiatives through electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology for passenger and cargo transportation within urban centers. This forward-looking approach aligns with President Yoon’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises and advancing Jeju’s economic and transportation sectors.
