The “Iron Fist” Counter-Offensive: President of Azerbaijan Interview
BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 15. The Azerbaijani Army launched a counter-offensive operation, later called the “Iron Fist”, on September 27, 2020, in response to the large-scale provocation of the Armenian armed forces along the frontline.
The 44-day second Karabakh war ended with the liberation of Azerbaijan’s territories from nearly 30-year Armenian occupation and the restoration of territorial integrity.
President Ilham Aliyev gave an interview to RIA Novosti discussing the military action results, losses, and territories liberated. The President emphasized the success of the Azerbaijani army in breaking through deep enemy defenses and reclaiming strategic positions.
He addressed claims of foreign mercenaries, stating the Azerbaijani army’s strength and capabilities negate any need for external military assistance. President Aliyev also highlighted the historical context of the conflict, urging understanding and respect for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
Speaking on compromises, President Aliyev reiterated the non-negotiable red lines of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and rejection of Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence. He emphasized the goal of restoring peace while ensuring the return of internally displaced persons.
Looking to the future, President Aliyev expressed hope for continued Azerbaijani-Russian friendship and cooperation, underlining the strategic partnership between the two nations.
