Oronyo village in Torit regains peace after government steps in.

The village of Oronyo in Eastern Equatoria State’s Torit County has finally found peace after a bout of sectional fighting last week. The state government stepped in to address the conflict, leading to a one-day peace dialogue on Sunday involving government officials, community representatives, and the warring factions.

The clash last Thursday resulted in one fatality, burnt houses, and displaced villagers. Despite the absence of arrests, the conflicting communities have expressed a desire to coexist peacefully and seek forgiveness for past transgressions. Youth representatives from both sides acknowledged being politically incited and expressed a strong commitment to reconciliation.

While the communities strive for peace, concerns remain about holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring the safety of residents. Calls have been made for the establishment of a police post in the area to deter crime and alleviate tensions among the youth.

State lawmaker Angelina Quintino welcomed the renewed calm but urged continued efforts to maintain peace and prevent future conflicts. The community’s willingness to forgive and unite signals a positive step towards lasting harmony in Oronyo village.
