The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit is advocating for an efficient tax system to ensure a fair distribution of the tax burden among citizens. Emphasizing the importance of combating tax avoidance and evasion, the agency highlighted the need for everyone to contribute their share towards generating revenue to provide essential services and infrastructure.

Speaking at the Revenue Assurance Summit in Abuja, the CEO of NFIU, Hafsa Bakari, pointed out the shift in focus towards increasing internally generated revenue to support government initiatives for education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security.

Recognizing the critical nature of tax crimes and revenue assurance, the NFIU has established a dedicated department to address these issues, expanding partnerships with both federal and sub-national revenue agencies to tackle tax evasion effectively.

While collaboration with State Internal Revenue Services is essential, the NFIU ensures the integrity and confidentiality of information through strict adherence to international standards and the establishment of Memorandum of Understanding agreements.
