Legislator urges ceasefire in Warrap clashes

Calling for Urgent Government Intervention in Warrap State: A Cry for Peace

In the midst of ongoing inter-communal fighting in Warrap State, Tonj North County TNLA member Mawut Dhor has urged the national government to step in and put an end to the violence. With at least 20 reported dead and 38 wounded in recent clashes, Dhor emphasized the need for immediate action, stating that the state government alone lacks the capacity to quell the bloodshed.

In response to the crisis, State officials have cited severe flooding as a major obstacle hindering efforts to contain the situation, leading security forces to establish roadblocks to prevent the supply of ammunition to the conflict zone. Despite challenges like the lack of landable airstrips complicating military intervention, the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces have pledged to address the violence.

The violence, fueled by incitement from criminal elements, has prompted President Salva Kiir to direct the newly appointed Governor of Warrap State to swiftly address the situation. Despite the 2018 peace agreement, inter-communal violence persists, highlighting the need for sustained efforts to promote peace and unity.
