Italy’s unique migrant plan with Albania has stirred controversy among human rights groups as the first group of intercepted migrants were transferred to Albania. The Italian navy rescued 16 migrants from Bangladesh and Egypt in international waters and are now being processed in Albania under a deal with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The initiative aims to streamline repatriation for migrants from “safe” countries.
However, concerns have been raised by human rights groups like Amnesty International and Sea Watch, questioning Albania’s ability to protect asylum seekers. The Italian-operated centres in Albania have also been criticized for being a violation of fundamental rights.
Despite promises of easing pressure on overcrowded migrant reception centers in Italy, the initial number of migrants transferred to Albania is significantly low. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi described the centers as “light detention,” emphasizing the availability of assistance and quick responses to asylum applications.
As Italy continues its efforts to curb illegal immigration, the collaboration with Tunisia and Libya underscores the government’s proactive stance. With a notable decrease in migrant arrivals in 2024, Italy’s controversial migrant plan remains a topic of interest across Europe.
