Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s migration policy collaboration with Albania is materializing, aiming to establish Italian-run detention centers. The first group of migrants rescued by Italy (16 individuals) is en route to Albania for processing. However, logistical and legal concerns persist regarding the viability of this initiative.

This complex agreement focuses on migrants rescued by Italian vessels in international waters, excluding vulnerable groups. Implementation involves detaining migrants in Albania for asylum processing, supervised by Italian courts through a video conferencing system. Despite Italy’s interest, uncertainties and criticisms, including from Amnesty International, surround the effectiveness and legal aspects of the venture.
