Israel’s Unprecedented Attacks on UNIFIL Forces

By Robert Inlakesh

Israel’s recent tank strikes on the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL) have drawn international condemnation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s aggressive speech at the United Nations General Assembly further exacerbated tensions, leading to Israel declaring the UN Secretary-General persona-non-grata.

The attacks on UNIFIL forces in Southern Lebanon, including direct tank fire on the headquarters, have fueled outrage and triggered pushback from the European Union. Netanyahu’s call for UN forces to leave the area, based on unfounded claims of Hezbollah presence, is a concerning escalation that jeopardizes international peacekeeping efforts.

Despite the lack of evidence, Israel continues to target UN personnel, making the Gaza conflict the deadliest for UN staff. Israel’s disregard for UN resolutions and judicial rulings raises questions about its membership in the United Nations.
