Exciting news is emerging from Iraq as the Ministry of Electricity has announced plans to install solar panels on the roofs of government buildings to generate electricity. This innovative move comes as part of the ministry’s strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on gas and fossil fuels for power production.
Ahmed Musa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, confirmed that discussions are underway with local and international companies to install these solar systems on 546 government buildings. An estimated budget of 90 billion Iraqi dinars has been allocated for this ambitious project.
With Iraq currently producing just over 27,000 megawatts while needing 48,000 megawatts to meet domestic electricity consumption, the introduction of solar energy projects is a welcome development. This initiative will not only increase the country’s electricity production capacity but also contribute to addressing the ongoing power outages that plague the nation, particularly during scorching summers.
By tapping into renewable energy solutions and partnering with companies like Masdar and ACWA Power, Iraq is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future. This newfound focus on solar energy signals a promising shift in the country’s energy landscape.
