Iran MP denies intention to develop atomic bomb

Iran’s Nuclear Intentions: Balancing Act

In a recent statement to media outlets, Iranian MP Ali Reza Novin clarified that Iran has no plans to develop an atomic bomb. However, in the face of external threats, Iran may reconsider its nuclear doctrine. Novin emphasized that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has drawn a clear line opposing the production of atomic weapons.

Despite possessing the necessary resources and knowledge, Iran remains committed to its non-nuclear stance. In response to rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly with Israel, the Iranian parliament is debating potential changes to the country’s defense strategy.

The backdrop of these discussions includes the 2016 Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action between Iran and the P5+1 group, as well as the US’s withdrawal in 2018 and subsequent sanctions. Against this backdrop, Iran’s decision to pursue a strategic plan in the nuclear sector has raised concerns about reduced monitoring capabilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
