Indian doctors skip meals to support Kolkata rape protest

Thousands of doctors in India have united in protest following the rape and murder of a colleague in August. Junior doctors in West Bengal initiated a hunger strike after a prolonged “cease work” strike demanding justice and improved safety for medical professionals. The strike escalated into a fast unto death after negotiations with the government failed to yield results.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Association rallied after the tragic death of a female trainee doctor who was sexually assaulted. While the government has agreed to address some of the association’s demands, key issues regarding safety measures for healthcare workers remain unresolved.

The Indian Medical Association coordinated a solidarity fast on Tuesday with the afflicted health workers in West Bengal. Despite the critical condition of some hunger strikers, many continue their protest in the city center, emphasizing the ongoing need for enhanced security within hospitals.

The national association stressed the significance of addressing the concerns of medical professionals to ensure a safe working environment. The Central Bureau of Investigation has pursued charges against a civil volunteer linked to the crime, underscoring the urgency of securing healthcare facilities for all workers in the field.
