Climate Change and Florida Legislators’ Denial: A Deadly Combination
Published on October 14, 2024
Hurricanes Helene and Milton, fueled by climate change, hit Florida hard. Despite scientific evidence, Florida legislators like Governor Ron DeSantis and his cohorts have chosen to ignore the pressing issues of climate change. They even passed a law scrubbing references to climate change from state legislation, effectively erasing the problem.
Florida, with its record-high sea surface temperatures, is experiencing more intense hurricanes due to the warm waters they pass over. Recent storms like Helene and Milton intensified rapidly, causing devastation. Rising sea levels exacerbate storm surges, adding to the destruction caused by these monster hurricanes.
Scientists warn that ignoring climate change will lead to more severe storms and catastrophic consequences. Despite the evidence, Florida’s leadership, influenced by denial and big industry, refuses to address the root cause or take necessary action. With the fate of Florida’s environment and residents at stake, the urgent need for climate action cannot be ignored.
