The recent diplomatic row between India and Canada has stirred controversy as several former diplomats dismiss Canada’s allegations against Indian diplomats in Ottawa. Former ambassadors have suggested that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “desperation” to gain support from radical elements has led to false accusations. In response, New Delhi expelled six Canadian diplomats and withdrew the high commissioner from Canada.
Former diplomat Rajiv Dogra criticized Trudeau’s actions, stating that the move comes as a result of his declining ratings and impending elections. Dogra highlighted the impact of Trudeau’s actions on bilateral ties and international opinion, emphasizing that such false propaganda could embolden extremist activities.
Other diplomats, like Dilip Sinha, noted the importance of reciprocity in diplomacy and commended India for taking necessary retaliatory measures against Canada’s irresponsible allegations. The strained relationship between the two countries dates back to Trudeau’s unfounded allegations regarding Indian agents in the killing of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Despite the tensions, India continues to stress the issue of pro-Khalistan elements operating from Canadian soil.
