EU Officially Opens Chapters with Albania in Accession Process
The European Union has taken a significant step in Albania’s accession negotiations by officially opening the first set of chapters. This milestone was reached after the second accession conference between the EU and Albania in Luxembourg. Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed their support and satisfaction during a joint press conference.
Szijjarto emphasized the historic nature of opening the chapters with Albania and stressed the importance of new members revitalizing the EU. Rama called the decision a historic day for both Albania and the EU, highlighting the impact of the Ukraine war as a wake-up call for Europe.
Albania officially applied for EU membership in 2009 and was granted “candidate status” in 2014. The recent chapter openings include judiciary, fundamental rights, public administration reform, public procurement, statistics, and financial control. Negotiations on these issues will continue to determine the overall pace of the accession process.
