EU foreign ministers discussed extending the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) to further train Ukrainian military forces. Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, highlighted the need to provide Ukraine with more capabilities and strengthen the training mission. Plans to extend the EUMAM mandate for two more years are in motion, pending EU Council approval. EUMAM, established in 2022, conducts training primarily in Poland and Germany. Borrell pledged to visit Ukraine once a final decision is made and mentioned progress in unblocking frozen European Peace Facility funds for military aid to Ukraine. Efforts are being made to reform the EPF to allow voluntary financial contributions and bypass Hungary’s veto on military aid to Ukraine. This veto has resulted in a significant backlog of 6.5 billion euros. In related news, German intelligence chief Bruno Kahl warned of a potential Russian attack on NATO by 2030, citing Moscow’s goals to push the U.S. out of Europe and create a Russian sphere of influence.
